I've been trying out some watercolour recently and finding there's a lot to learn. Most of my "good" pictures were lucky mistakes I think, because when I actually try to depict something it just looks rubbish.

Anyway, I've armed myself with about 10 books and videos from the local library and will be spending Christmas making a few masterpieces... (aye, right...8-)

I live in a small town south of Edinburgh and was surprised to find that including the surrounding villages they had about 90 books on watercolours.

If nothing else, they will show you lots of individual styles and lots of tips.

I always thought everyone in the UK did watercolors. LOL. I started with watercolors, found a great way to do clouds. wet the area, paint cerelian Blue, then right away take some toilet paper and blot it out.Masking fluid is fun also.So many neat things and so little time.

It's a lifelong thing Darlin. Can't be anything else. people study for years and years. Gods honest truth The day before I gave it a whirl I could not draw anything and it was a total accident how I started. My 3 year old came in and handed me a 6 color crayola watercolor set. asked me to draw a tree. In one minute, It changed my life.I tried my best on my own and just couldn't get past certain things, I then went to night school at UCLA in a drawing class, came home and studied eveything I could get my hands on. drew and tried to copy every artist I could, went to museams and stood there with my sketch pad for months and months trying to understand the principles. went to australia for a month to be alone and painted in watercolor everything I saw. 12 hours a day. 3 years later I was teaching. If I can do it, anyone can. But ya have to really need it.Just like photography,Dance, music and all the rest. work, work, work.Trust me on this. sketch as much as you can. Look into a makeup mirror and draw your face, over and over a thousand times. Date and sign everything. then look back and see how you've changed.Keep at it. thats the trick.

It comes with practice so you have to be patient. There is another book you may want to take a look at,¨drawing on the right side of the brain¨ by Betty Edwards. Check it out.

I didn't find it helpful. buy a art book on Durer or michaelangelio and study it, Copy it and keep copying it. then get some charcoal and do Van Gogh. The postman first. you can get these very cheap. There large art books for school study.3 dollars max.
