While I can understand his complaints about bad photography and the keywords, and I'm sure it gets boring looking at the same types of photos over and over again, that is his job. The stock sites recommend looking at the bestsellers to guide you, so if he's seen a thousand lonesome trees, or millions of cds and keyboards, that's because it is what is selling. It is called STOCK photography. A lot of the pictures are going to have mundane and utilitarian subjects. Sounds like he needs a new job.

trust me, thats not what is selling. Thats what people shoot when they start out , then Wise up.And it's a Her.

I worked for a stock photography agency, about a year ago.
It was the "middle" organization between photographers (and their slides, some from 1980), and the big stock houses.

As a start-up photographer, there was nothing greater to me than the opportunity to work within the business and work with the work of photographers who were just phenomenal, in that I was fortunate.

My role in this company was to scan/digitize transparent slides using the big Hassey scanners that cost as much as my vehicle. Once those slides had been digitized, we were required to "clean" the dust off of the images that the scanner picked up, and remove any scratches or "clean up" the images (yes at 100%, and with 100MB files, sometimes one image would take a half an hour), without doing any pixel damage. There was also color calibration done in the office, professional keywording (by a girl with an English degree), etc.

In the professional environment I was in, we were never allowed to sit at the computer for more than a 3 hour stretch. After three hours, images DO start blurring together (especially at 100%), and you can no longer be expected to realistically see the images. Get up, get a cup of coffee, go from "cleaning" to "color correcting", move from digital scans, to images taken with a digital camera (slightly different workflow) and everything was rotated so that it wouldn't become torture.

Once it becomes torture (as was sometimes inevitable), you really do start hating certain subject matters. The lions in Africa eating their prey was particularly nasty, and the birds with ticks series was another that put my stomach on edge. However, I never once complained to my employer, my co-workers (unless jokingly) nor especially the photographer. It's just not professional. I did my job, I loved my job, and yes, if I had to do it again, I probably would.

10 hours at the computer straight is impossible. 7 hours is unreasonable. 3 hours at a stretch was barely tolerable. It's damaging to your eyes, to your circulatory system, and yes, your psyche.

I don't know who this person works for, but I hope, for everyone's sake, they are able to establish better standards for their employees soon, rather than what it sounds like, "working for a quota" (or so I'm guessing).

Now I see why some of my images are tagged with "blurry, out of focus". When I submit (and it hasn't been much), I submit maybe two, or three images at a time, culled from entire memory cards, when I actually have time to get out and shoot.

A lot of newbie photographers (myself included) shoot what they know. Sometimes it's their computer, money, cords, cars, feet and camera gear. I think everyone who wants to be successful (with anything) has to go through a process of pushing themselves outside of their comfort zones or what they're typically used to seeing and shooting.

It's a shame that reviewers have become bitter in the push to push microstock. I hope not everyone works, or feels the same way.

Thanks for the insight.

WELL SAID!!!!

80/20 doesn't seem to apply. 90/10 or 95/5?
5% of the photographers make 95% of the money?
Just like 5% of my pictures make 95% of my sales?

Of all the 27,000 photographers here, What was the percentage out of those that pay the bills?

Plus this article is so full of great ideas! Now, why hadn't I thought of taking pictures of my feet and USB plugs before??? ;-)

Hey! Go a bit easy will you!
I am doing my best to get photos uploaded and I'm still not getting it right. I am stuck on getting the size right as I'm not technically minded. I live in a very remote part of Donegal Ireland and there is NO help. I'm off work due to an illness and so photography is my only outlet.
I have even spent hours in a computer shop as they tried to help me get my photos to the right size etc.
So as yet I've no photos accepted but I am still trying.

If I ever do manage to get photos accepted I would appreciate your comments - I'd be glad for you to reivew my photos.
I did submit some way back but they were rejected so
I've asked in the forum for someone to help me get started again by just getting the size right - so keep an eye out for my photos - with a bit of luck and help I'll eventually get them accepted.

I like scenery photos as its beautiful where I live and I love animals, I have a small pet sanctuary - all rescued animals and they are exquisite ( go to www.hornheadpetsanctuary.com to see my photos) - I don't like strawberries or flowers or shoes. Boring! As for money?!! I have none to photograph! Which is why I want to try sell photos via Shutterstock
I like animals and I run a farm singlehanded. I could photo lots of horse and donkey manure if you think that would get me anywhere?!! Just joking.

well im not sure how to take that one...
all i can see is negativity from the reviewer, was she forced to do the job or something??.
I can understand that she would have a painstakingly hard day almost everyday she has to review, but at the end of the day im sure she chose to be a reviewer.
Being in the defence force and leaving my family behind sometimes 8 months out of the year to fight a war that doesn't have a great deal to do with my country is very hard sometimes but i learn to battle through and think positive!

Annette, why not upload to the critique forum? It is a long time ago that I visited that part of Ireland, but with the immense beauty of your surroundings and animals, you can certainly shoot yourself into shutterstock. Menno

HAHAHA The original post was amazing! Now I know why the 40 shots I submitted of my tennis shoe in the yard, on the patio, in the doorway, in my bed sleeping, on my foot, in the tub, in the toilet (final shot), in the fridge, watching tv, with the remote in it, on my computer screen (on top), in the cupholder of my car, on a school bus, a sequence of shots of it walking down the street, in a classroom with kids (blurred faces to protect the innocent). The tennis shoe might have been the problem... since it was adidas, but I removed the lines on the side of the shoe by doing a lasso delete, leaving a big large white spot.
