Hi
I would like to see a section something like "Meet our photoghraphers" or something along that line, where the photographer has a complete profile along with a picture (if they want).
They could add/update thier profile when needed.
Maybe a link to thier shutterstock gallery in there somewhere.
Possibly a link to a homepage of thier own site on thier profile.
An area in the profile that a buyer can leave a message for the photographer, or the option to let the photographer post thier email
so a buyer can email them direct.
I would assume most buyers use shutterstock due to the photo guality and the fact they get unlimited downloads for a set price, so I dont think
having direct contact between a buyer and photographer would hurt thier business at all. But it would give the photographer a good chance of uploading images that are almost guarenteed to sell and give the buyer
exactly what they are looking for...

I think just a short bio, maybe some 'interview' style questions like type of camera, favorite style, favorite subject, etc. and of course a link to the ss gallery (maybe even the most recent/favorite 3 or 4 thumbs)... but not a link away from ss, keep 'em here, keep 'em downloading!

I think when you start to personalize the relationship between the photographers and the buyers, you run the risk of shooting yourself in the foot.
They have all these things on the other sites, and quite frankly, I don't think it enhances the experience all that much, if at all. A small profile does foster a sense of community, but we seem to have a nice community without it.
We have some wonderfully talented, professional photographers here. I doubt a buyer will contact John Doe for a picture of a pea when they could contact someone with a professional website, who obviously does photography as more than just a hobby. I think it makes the playing field uneven. This is why I think requests coming from Lisa or Andrea is also a great idea. Everyone has the same chance to provide the requested topic. On another site, when a request comes in, it's like someone just threw bait to the sharks and everyone trips over themselves to fill the request for 10 cents.
Anyway, just my few cents worth of nonsense.

Why? Do you think all the buyers are going to jump ship in favour of 1 photographer? Where they would have to pay a lot more than $.20 for a picture?

Its for the buyers mainly, because they may be interested in who's picture they are buying, what camera they use, etc etc....

Or you could take it as a challenge or incentive to get better if you feel you would have a hard time competing with the professionals or those
that do it as more than a hobby but less than a professional.
Bottom line is, shutterstock wants quality pictures for thier buyers, I am sure they dont care if they are from a hobbyist or a professional as long as they sell.
If someone shoots photographs as a hobby and has no intention of progressing beyond that, then then they will always be on an uneven
playing field.
I am not suggesting the professionals get preferential treatment, but if a buyer likes what they see from someone here, they should have the ability to deal with that person.
Not just so they may get a better picture, but because that photographer (and it could be you) lives in an area that has a landmark, or a certain shot that is only available where you live, and they buyer wants another 1 or 2, but at different angles, time of day...etc etc...
My intention for a photographer bio area is not so the professionals get more sales or to hijack buyers from here, but rather an incentive to have buyers keep coming back if they know they have a good chance to get what they need from here...

I'm a photographer based in Adelaide, South Australia... I sell Canon parts and equipment for a job, and take photo's for far too much of the rest of the time... I am a confirmed ShutterStockaholic... :-)

Having heard about the rules for photography there, and that reflectors are a no-no unless you have a permit for the shoot, I reckon I'd end up locked up within an hour of arriving... so send me your number and you can be my 'one call'... lol

oh ya we are in the middle of sever rain at the moment
yesterday we had an actuial TORNADO on my Street!
tore the roof tiles off the neighbors house, the tree out of anouthers yard, a picture window from anouther, ripped a palm tree out from its base and tossed it over an 8 ft wall and into the street, and more!
you might want to wait a month
but I would love to have a friend down under so when I want to go visit

There were one or two tornados which touched down in Sacramento, CA today! Hope someone got some shots.
