What is the easiest way to make the shadows lighter and the over exposed highlights darker (without merging multiple layers / images etc)

Don't overdo it. I found too much shadow lightening adds noise and blurs focus a little. |

I agree. This can be a useful tool, but it's all too easy to over do it. After the defaults, move the sliders back as far as you can until it just accomplishes what you want. Then look closely (over 100%) and see if it introduced any junk that wasn't there before. |
