OK mon ami's that was nicely obtuse! :)

OP, the smaller the f number, I.E. f 2.8 means it is a faster laens than a f3.5-4.5-5.6 etc.
A really fast lens is of the order of 1.2 or 1.4.
What it amounts to is the glass is is Bigger and lets more light transmit through it that the higher numbered lenses.

This is why NIKON make a $2000 lens which is 70mm-200mm f2.8 VR, and a 70mm-300mm f3.5-5.6 VR lens for $1000. You get what you pay for, the former is an exceptional piece of glass and electronics, the latter is, well something less! Nikon have three grades of lenses, so buyer beware.

I always that it was dumb to call it a "fast" lens.

Really it makes more sense to call it a "bright" lens.

Except "bright" implies that it is a source of illumination or has high reflectance!
But I take your point there is possibly a better term that is easier to understand exactly what it's significance is, and that would be "transmission coefficient".

It's brighter because it lets in more light. Makes sense to me.

If it works for you my freind that is all that matters!

Dictionary meaning of "bright" :
1. Emitting or reflecting much light: full of light; shining.
2. Of brilliant color; vivid
3. Glorious; illustrious
4. Having or showing high intelligence; quick witted.
5. Lively; vivacious
6. Hopeful; auspicious

So I would have thought for non English speaking peoples the incorrect usage of an English word would confuse the heck out of them, since there are already so many correct meanings of the word.

But like I said whatever works for you, works for you! :)
