Hello! I am thinking about dabbling in vectors. I wanted to try a free version such as inkscape 1st. Does anyone here use inkscape exclusively? Do you need any other programs? I know nothing about vectors and just want to play around a little. Any advice would be helpful.

Inkscape can suit all your needs. But other software can improve your possibilities.

Like Daemys said, Inkscape can suit all your needs -- and pretty nicely. I'm using Inkscape exclusively for my vector illustrations, but I'm using other applications for other images (Cinema 4D, etc).

If you're just looking to get started, I think it's a great way to experiment and learn. I like it a lot.

I too am an exclusive Inkscape user for now and it is very verstile. The only issue is that you will need a software like PS to convert Inkscape's PNG files to JPG. Inkscape does not export in JPG for now at least. But that is not a big problem.

Did you try a program called the Gimp? its free.
Or you can always get Ps elements. Average cost is $50. It pretty much has every thing except for masking est.

I'm using Inkscape too but I realized a serious problem when I want to export an Inkscape SVG file to EPS. The Shutterstock rejected all my files that included gradients. The reason that Inkscape can't handle the gradient export to EPS- as I read on the Inkscape forum.
I try to read my inkscape SVG into Illustrator but the gradients disappeared. When I try to vectorize the jpg file the gradients are not converted properly.

Jaminwell: how can you convert your SVG files to EPS that the gradients converted properly - for example the picture in your portfoilo is a vector image : polar bear on iceberg is contain gradients - if I see properly

ps: sorry for my English

You know, I've heard that a number of times, but I haven't had any problems uploading .eps files with gradients, and I checked them all in Photoshop before uploading and they look just fine. I think it's *certain kinds of gradients* that cause problems. I think the standard radial and linear gradients are just fine. I haven't had any problems with them, anyway.

I have had the same problems as well. So I downloaded a trial version of Illustrator 8 to check things out and yep sure enough, the problem is that Illustrator 8 doesn't like the gradients. But I wonder if the Inkscape EPS files with gradients are compatible with other versions of Illustrator?

I have found that Photoshop CS2 can read Inkscape eps files.
You will have to flatten the resulting image, but you can use PS
to make full size or small images from your Inkscape eps files.
