And I'm definitely sure, that I didn't receive such an e-mail. Are Europeans not affected?

I pay taxes in Germany. Why should I fill out US tax forms?

Certainly no e-mail from Shutterstock about Tax here in the UK.

P.S.: Any chance of an answer from Admin about whether submitters in countries other than the USA need to be concerned about this ?? I sincerely hope NOT !

May be I can shine some light on the W9 and W8 issues.

A W9 is an IRS verification form that verifies that you are eligible to work in the US. They do that either by you Social Security number or your business identification number (EIN). With this W9, Shutterstock is enable to send people that are working in the US and are authorized to work in the US a form 1099 at the end of the year if you made more than $600.oo during that tax year. (not sure where the $400.00 comes from what was mentioned. The amount is $600.00) Form 1099 is for independent contractors (individuals) and for sole proprietors with or without employees. Typically corporations such as regular or "C" corps, "S" corp, LLC's etc. do not receive a 1099, but could nevertheless.

A W8 is for foreigners and are not US legal aliens (green card) but have an US Social Security number or an US "Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN) I believe that recipients of a W8 get form 1042 instead of a 1099.

For more details, consult the IRS website @ www.irs.gov As said elsewhere, you can also find all forms there. In order to cover my rear end (this is the US after all), please don't take my word for it

To ad one more thing to the long list of suggestions for SS, there should really be a separate forum about business related issues. (I volunteer to moderate)

Hope this helps

Thanks, rudyumans.

I'll also try to clarify: You should have received the email (about a week ago) ONLY IF your earnings were below $600 for the year 2008. Otherwise you are most likely in compliance.

For the new TOS, this applies to 2009 and beyond (until further notice).

If you have questions, email submit@shutterstock.com to inquire.

Thanks,

John

Wait, now im really confused, I am in Australia, and have never send anything at all to SS, though received well over $400 in sales last year, though only joined up August last year.

Do I need to fill out any form to send to SS, if so, what is it and why? What are the consequinces if I dont fill it out?

I Did not, so I can assume, that if I did not get an email regarding tax forms, no action required on my behalf, apart from supplying shutterstock with sellable images, awesome.

Can now relax and eat some pretzel.

Thank you John.

I think that SS should have a separate forum for business related issues and questions like this. I posted a topic about that (just now) in the feature request/ suggestions forum. There seems to be a need. I also hear that from other people BTW

have fun

I received an email for the tax form - I'm in the U.S. so it was a W-9. I made sure the request was from SS. My sales stats and submitter number matched the email so I'm sure it was safe and legit. I filled the W-9 and emailed it back as a pdf. I haven't made enough in sales to worry about taxes but SS said they needed the form to continue payments to me. I just don't know if they got my emailed form yet or not...
