I'm still not convinced. LOL I've tried three different RAW processors (Camera RAW, CaptureNX, Lightroom 2.0), and for the life of me cannot get the quality of results that I get by processing in JPEG. Quite frankly, everything ends up looking like crap...so obviously I'm either doing something wrong when processing RAW, or I just don't get it.

Looks like you need another visit to casamia cara mia~

Two days, spend two days with Lightroom 2.0. Play with every function and you will get it.

I'm sure you will never regret it.

Good luck, friend!

Slide time and filters for correction are history, today my usual way is Raw + auto wb, for most situations, but for studio work good way is to set color balance in Kelvins.

I NEVER use auto WB, for me this the worst way.
After session if I want to correct color there is possibility that every single picture could have different WB because it was on auto.
It's a nightmare!
At my D300 auto white balance is working good in combination with RAW, but You are wright, if I have more similar shoots I set WB for that situation, as I sad in studio good way is to sett WB in Kelvin. Each equipment is different with UV corrected lamps or not, old yellow silk on lightbox or umbrella, etc...Also at location for more similar shoots at same location and light, reasonable is to set appropriate WB, but if I am making more different shoots with different lights auto WB+RAW is easier

Can't speak for other brands, but my Canon bodies have always the same WB (no matter if it's wrong or right) for a complete session[*], so batch processing of RAW photos is no problem.
But I use RAW and a fixed WB anyway so I can decide later.
Oh, and to answer the original question, I just include something known to be white into the first photos, usually a single sheet of (inexpensive) copy paper.

I shot RAW, Auto WB and correct it (if necessary) in Canon's DPP raw converter. I find it simple and easy.

Mike

WB if your gonna stay shooting jpg then you should set your WB in camera, "grey card"... Then you can still tweak a little in PS....

But hey you could still drive a model T too!!! A nice new camaro does a better job and looks nicer too!!!

Mike lightroom has a 30 day trial shoot 100 or so shots RAW+JPG and play it a bit, I bet you will end up driving the camaro!!!

Have fun Bob

Thanks Bob

The issue is no longer really should I shoot Raw or Jpg.
Its going to be a New Computer, (this one is on its last megabites (so to speak), and getting PS CS4 (or 5 or what ever version is out when I upgrade)
Since I just purchased lights ($2000.00+) and am going to Vegas next week my descresinary money (unless I win BIG!) is currently on hold for other things like Food, House Payments, Truck Payment (last one next month), etc etc etc

Oh to be rich and care free

There are free programs (free permanently, not just trials) for handling RAW photos. They may or may not give you the best results or the smoothest workflow, but they'll give you a way to play with RAW without spending any money. DCRaw comes to mind, along with various programs that incorporate it directly or indirectly, which (if I'm reading the site right) includes Picasa, Photoshop, ACDSee, IrfanView, and others. I've used a combination of IrfanView, UFRaw, and the GIMP (all of which are free). It's often worth looking to see what is available in the free/open-source "market."

I second this. The latest versions of GIMP + UFRaw gives you absolutely professional results.

The workflow is still a bit slower than Capture1 + Photoshop, but unless you make >100 photos each day there's no reason (anymore) to spend >$1000 just to work with RAW images.
