Okay I am new here and want to get my photos submitted right the first time. I have read that if I scan photos at 300dpi it will meet the 2.5 requirement. So, to be on the safe side I scanned at 600dpi and when I look at the properties for the file size it only reads a little over 600 Kb, what am I doing wrong or am I reading this info wrong?
If I scan at 600dpi and do little or no cropping, resizing etc..will I be okay to just upload?
I have been a film photographer for years and just getting in on the digital stuff...I know a little behind....
Thanks for your patience and help. |

If you scan a 6X4 at 300dpi, you will get an 1800 X 1200 pixel image, or 2.1mp - that is sufficient for the site - don't worry about the file 'size' - that's representative of how complex the data is and how well it compresses - just don't use a high compression if you're saving jpegs, and all will be well...
As to being 'right' if you don't do any editing, that's largely dependant on the quality of the print - if the scan looks good, you don't need to edit it - editing it may make it a better/stronger image, but it may not be 'vital'...
The quality of the scanner plays a part, too - some do a terrible job of colour rendition, some do a really good job - only the experience of scanning is going to help you with that...
You need to scan an image, and check it at 100% on your screen - is it as sharp and clear as the original? Is the original sharp and clear enough to be submitted, or has the scanner eaten the quality?
Cheers,

On a related topic, is anything over 2.0mp okay, as stated in FAQ? When I upload my images there is a reminder that they must be over 2.5MP. Which is it?
Thanks in advance. |
