- Do a Save As and select Illustrator EPS format.

- Then in the next window there should be a menu that allows you select which Illustrator version to use. Just select Illustrator 8.

I'm still using CS2, and in that second window there is drop-down menu that lists all the Illustrator versions. I imagine it hasn't changed much in CS4.

Hey guys... I thought I won't post a new thread on this question. So I'll ask here ;)

I'm using CS3 right now. And when I save the EPS, Illy asks me what version of Illustrator to use to save it. Okay.. I choose Illustrator 8. So far so good ;)

But when I open that *.eps in my CS3, in the links panel I see only shapes that have the "bitmap" icon on the side. Or at least I think it shows that these are bitmaps. I'm not very familiar with this palette :)

If I save it this way in CS3 how can I be sure that all the gradients, gaussian blurred shapes etc. will be compatible with Illustrator 8?

And I can't seem to find illy 8 to test them :(

Cheers,
Anton.

Unfortunately most of those effects are NOT compatible with EPS-8 since they rasterize upon export to EPS-8. Adobe was aware of the problem back then and fixed it with Illustrator 10, so only EPS-8 will cause your special effects (some gradients, drop shadows, blurs, all transparency) to rasterize.

You just have to learn to achieve those effects without the Illustrator filters or transparency. There is a good thread on transparency tricks and bitmapping (rasterizing) here: http://submit.shutterstock.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=766367

Good luck and don't hesitate to ask questions, most of the seasoned illustrators in here have gone through all of that and triumphed, including me.
