How do I cancel or close my Contributor account?

Learn how to pause or permanently close your Contributor account, handle unpaid earnings, and understand the closure timeline.

If you no longer wish to sell your work on Shutterstock, you have two options:

1. Opting out of licensing (temporary option)

  • You can stop selling without fully closing your account.

  • Go to Account Settings in your dashboard and select the option to opt out of licenses.

  • Your account stays open but your images are removed from sale.

  • If you later decide to return, simply reverse the settings - you will not need to resubmit your work, and your earnings level for the year will be preserved.

  • Once you opt back in, it may take up to 30 days before your work is back on sale.

2. Closing your account permanently

  • There is a link in your Account Settings (found under your account menu on your homepage) to Delete Account.

  • You can use this button if you have no unpaid earnings (or if your unpaid earnings are less than $1).

3. Accounts with unpaid earnings

  • If you have an outstanding balance to be paid, you will not be able to use the Delete Account link.

  • In this case, Shutterstock must arrange your final payout before closing your account.

  • Please contact submit@shutterstock.com to request assistance with this process.

4. Important notes

  • Contributor accounts with unpaid earnings must first be paid out before the account can be closed.

  • Under the Contributor Terms of Service, it may take up to 90 days for an account to be fully closed.

  • During this period, your content may still be available for sale.

  • As an alternative, you may wish to opt out of licensing (see section 1), which allows you to reactivate your portfolio at any time without fully closing your account.
