What is a sensitive use license?
A sensitive use license allows an image of a recognizable model to be used in a way that might cause a reasonable person to believe that the subject of the image:
suffers from a physical or mental health condition
endorses, advocates, or believes in a particular product, service, cause or opinion
is otherwise associated with an issue that might considered controversial or unflattering
Who uses images in this manner?
Advertising agencies are by and large the most common users of the sensitive use portion of our license because some of their advertising projects are for pharmaceutical clients who in turn are most likely to need the sensitive use. However, it is important to note that actual “sensitive uses” are only a small part of the total of uses by these buyers.“Sensitive uses” are rare and a very tiny percentage of image uses, but this license gives you the possibility of higher royalties and the highest number of sales opportunities.
Are there any restrictions with a sensitive use license?
Shutterstock will not license Content for use in connection with matter that is pornographic, defamatory or deceptive, or in a manner that could be considered libelous, obscene, or illegal in nature.
How much do I earn for sensitive use licenses?
You will earn higher royalties for “sensitive use” licenses, regardless of whether or not a sensitive use is made of your content. Sales for these licenses follow our percentage royalty model and are reflected in your Earnings Summary.
