Why was my content rejected for Mature Content Designation?

Subject matter with nudity, sexual themes, profanity, or graphic depictions must be designated as Mature Content

If your content has been rejected with “This content must be designated as “Mature Content,” it means the subject matter and/or metadata is not acceptable for all audiences and requires the Mature Content tag.

The Mature Content tag prevents content intended for mature audiences from appearing in Shutterstock’s general search results. Content with the Mature Content tag will only be visible on Shutterstock.com when the Safe Search filter is turned off.

Content that requires the Mature Content tag:

  • Visible gluteal cleft (buttocks), pubic hair, or female-identified nipples or areola (including modern artwork depicting this subject matter)

  • Fully nude models with covered genitals, gluteal cleft, pubic hair, or female-identified nipples or areola (including modern artwork depicting this subject matter)

  • Illustrations of genitals or anus, including medical imagery

  • Sex toys

  • Sexual or suggestive content, such as depictions of sexual behavior, adult concepts, sexual innuendo, and terminology intended for adults (e.g., sexual or suggestive phrases, quotes, sayings, etc.)

  • Mating animals or explicit depictions of animal genitalia or anus

  • Profanities or vulgar language in content or metadata

  • Graphic subject matter that may be disturbing or inappropriate for a general audience (e.g., graphic medical scenes/surgeries, traumatic injuries, etc.)

Mature content model releases are required for nude models or models who are part of sexual/suggestive concepts. See here for additional information.

You will find the Mature Content tag in the "More options" section on the Submit content page:
